Curbing of Media
November 18th, 2007 | by Tauqeer Kurd |CURBING OF MEDIA
After the imposition of emergency in Pakistan by General Pervez Musharraf, along with other restrictions, media was kept on a tight rein, showing another tawdry behavior in order to curtail the on-going dastard acts conducted by the regime so that the people blindly imitate whatever is said,by the obsequious channels etc,.
Media plays a vital role in making the people keep a abreast of the current scenario. Media in Pakistan some years earlier has made strides in its liberalism but now it has been unprecedentedly curbed , the media has ensued in heavy losses due to govt. sanctions. This on the other hand seems to be a process of blackmailing.Deep down, the ban on media has worsen the internal affairs of the state, moreover constructed a stark cheap image internationally. Several foreign allies of Pakistan have condemned this act. Along with the local channels, foreign channels have also been banned by stating that the foreign channels showed subjects like gay marriages which are against norms of Pakistani society. This seems more than ambiguous statement by information minister as he was reluctant to argue on banning local private channels.
Media made commendable efforts in this very regime, providing sublime information to the people and restoring the ephemeral chaos, and confrontations between govt. and opposition. But the new Pemra rules curbed the media rights along with the rights of the people:Deprived them from reaching any sort of information.
Advertisements suffered and are still suffering extensive loss as they can’t air their commercials. Making people deprive of their right to reach information and causing a loss of billions to the industrialists , and arresting several journalists, is the worst form of military dictatorship ever observed in the history of Pakistan.
Media which is working like a mirror, shows you whatever you are. An ugly face would look ugly in front of a mirror. So it does not mean the mirror should be rammed against the wall. Similarly it is better to clear the message instead of clearing the messenger.
