Hazards Of Science: Our Own Mismanagement
February 4th, 2008 | by John Monroe |Technology along with science, as it creates ease and comfort for us on one hand, also results in hazardous outcomes if not regulated. That’s what also known as hazards of science, sometimes. Not going to industrial technology, but just taking an example of house hold items like, micro wave, air condition, heaters, mobiles etc, we see a lot of problems that become part of our life, either due to carelessness or the risk exposure of the equipment. For instance, a poorly maintained air-conditioning system can promote the growth and spread of microorganisms, such as Legionella pneumophila. This may happen due to poor maintenance or carelessness at the time of air conditioning installation.
Generally air conditioning, includes filtration, humidification, cooling, disinfection, etc., that’s necessary to provide a clean, safe, hypoallergenic atmosphere in a specific area. And it’s most desired for allergic and asthma patients, but air conditioning gives best results only if maintained properly.
This was one of the examples of hazards of science, whereby it’s clear that science is what we need in all spheres of life, but at the same time it’s hazardous if not maintained properly. S, science and technology is not what is hazardous, it’s our own ways to use them that determines comfort or hazard for us.
